Adobe LightRoom 4 will not be suported by windows xp

een quite a few comments about the fact that Lightroom 4 Beta doesn’t work with Windows XP (and you can probably guess that the full version isn’t going to work with it either). Last week Tom Hogarty (Lightroom Product Manager) wrote about the reasons behind that decision on his blog. Here’s a quick snippet but you can go here to read the rest:

“As many have noticed, the Lightroom 4 public beta we released last week does not support Windows XP. This decision did not come lightly and was based on a number of factors. With each version of Lightroom, our goal is always to provide a consistently excellent customer experience. Developing and testing across Operating System versions and platforms to ensure that we’re achieving this goal is a significant effort that takes time and resources. XP is substantially different from Windows Vista and Windows 7, and requires a independent testing matrix, which increases the complexity of our development efforts…”

I know it’s always hard to swallow something like this (well, if you’re an XP user that is), but here’s the thing… Microsoft barely support XP anymore. The Mainstream support phase for XP has passed. And it’s 10 years old. I hate to tell ya, but 10 years in technology might as well be 50. I think Adobe absolutely did the right thing here, so that they can indeed continue to provide a good experience for it’s users, and continually enhance Lightroom and push it in the directions it needs to go (and keep the price at a place that it needs to be).

Adobe Photoshop CS5 - Removing Power lines etc

Phone and power lines are a bit of a pain.
Content-Aware Spot Healing in CS5 has fixed this.

Here's how.......

Using the Pen tool (P), add a path to the line; choose the Spot Healing Brush (J) with Content-Aware selected in the Options Bar; change the brush size to two times the width of the wire; and in the Paths panel (Window>Paths), select the path and click the Stroke Path with Brush icon

Imagine a ladder. The bottom rung of the ladder represents pure black (Zone 0). The top rung of the ladder represents pure white (Zone 9). The mid-point of the ladder (Zone 5) represents 18% gray or the accepted average reflectance of light from a given subject, which is interpreted by your camera’s integrated light meter as the correct exposure for both B&W and color images. From the mid-point, Zone 5, each sequential step or zone represents a change of one f-stop. Zone 4 requires an exposure of one f-stop less than your meter reading (or Zone 5). Conversely, Zone 6 requires an exposure of one f-stop more than your meter reading. Therefore, the entire Zone System encompasses a nine-stop differential, which is more than adequate to address even the most daunting high contrast scene in nature.
Now, let’s add values to these Zones. These are values Ansel Adams himself associated with the nine Zones.
Zone 9 – known as key white or pure white – pure white paper or snow in bright sunlight.
Zone 8 – gray/white, near white – distinct highlight detail, like a white wall in sunlight or brilliant surfaces in flat light.
Zone 7 – light gray – pale “white” skin, a concrete walkway in sunlight.
Zone 6 – mid-tone gray – average “white” skin or shaded areas in snow on a bright, sunlit day.
Zone 5 – medium gray or 18% gray – darker “white” skin or lighter “black skin,” light foliage or the dark blue of a clear blue sky.
Zone 4 – medium dark gray – slightly darker “black” skin, dark foliage or shadows in landscapes.
Zone 3 – very dark gray – distinct shadow texture is visible.
Zone 2 – dark gray/black – only subtle textures are visible.
Zone 1 – near black – shadows in faint light or rooms without light.
Zone 0 – key black or pure black – carbon or photo paper black.
Remember your camera is calibrated to read 18% gray as “correct” and assumes that is the desired amount of light reflectance. Thus, it will average the light readings of extreme shadows or highlights resulting in over-exposed or under-exposed images, respectively. The Zone System eliminates this problem by assigning these familiar “values” to each zone. The key to success with the Zone System is to carefully pre-visualize your subject and apply the correct Zone values to the important exposure areas. Then, you must adjust your exposure settings accordingly to accurately produce the results you want.
Let’s say you are on vacation and want to take a photo of snow-covered Pikes Peak. It’s a typical sunny day in Colorado. You take a meter reading of the snow, which suggests a shutter speed of 1/500 and a corresponding aperture of f/16. If you snap the photo using these settings, the resulting image will be dull 18% gray. According to the Zone System, snow in bright sunlight falls under Zone 9, which is four stops above Zone 5, or 18% gray. Therefore, you must first open up four stops to f/4 and shoot at 1/500. Now, your photo will clearly show the brilliance of the white snow under the Colorado sun.

Don't critique this students image on cropping as I have re cropped so you can not determine who the subject is

The First image is one that I used levels in PS to adjust the exposure of both the highlights and the mid tones
I am pretty sure we can all see a big difference
the original image the exposure was based on the light reflected back from the T shirt
causing the camera to under expose

Remember reflected light metering only works accurately when we are taking pictures of kodak grey cards !!!

"Quick way to zoom on Photoshop"
If you're working on something and need to zoom in on an area to edit or just inspect it, you can hold Ctrl+Spacebar and then click and drag the box over the area you want to zoom in on. This doesn't matter what tool you're in. To zoom all the way back out to full screen, click Ctrl+0 (thats a zero). This has saved me a lot of time editing.

This is on a PC.
And yes, it does work this way in CS5, you have to turn off Scrubby Zoom first.
To do this, click on the Zoom Tool in your Tools Palette a then uncheck Scrubby Zoom in the bar on the top of the window."

In Lightroom 3, when you import your photos (File > Import Photos), you’ll see the large dialog that opens. Of course it’s got a ton of options in it, most of which you don’t need on a daily basis when importing. If you’re like me, you just choose a different folder destination, but everything else usually remains the same.

If that’s the case, you can minimize the dialog to just show you the essentials by clicking that minimize button (downfacing arrow) in the bottom left corner of the dialog.

Many of you know that while I have many passions
and Photography is but one of them
my longest running passion next to my wife
is that of Ham Radio

This week-end presents a great time for anyone that is curious about this hobby
to come see
as we are amogst thousands of amateur radio operators that will be playing in a national event known as Field Day

Most of the activity is Saturday
but I will be there from Friday after noon thru Sunday Noon
A catfish dinner will be offerd by an on sight caterer at 6 pm Saturday and the cost is only $13 per person

ARRL Field Day: “Hams” take it to the streets June 26-27

Shreveport/Bossier City, Louisiana - Amateur Radio activities are growing and many radio operators, often called “hams,” will be showing
off their capabilities June 26-27 at The Gazebo near the public boat launch on Arthur Teague Parkway on the Bossier City side of the Red River.
Thousands of Amateur Radio operators will be Erecting radio stations at community parks, campgrounds, schools and emergency centers around the country, they will hold a “Field Day” showing their emergency communications capabilities while having fun talking and texting to friends with their radios.

Far from fading in the age of cell phones and Internet,
Amateur Radio has been growing in the US and 2009 saw over 30,000 new
people became “hams.” Figures from the ARRL, the national
association for Amateur Radio, show consistent growth for the past five
years. The technical skills of hams also improved as almost 50% of
American Amateur Radio operators now go beyond the entry level FCC
licensing requirements and pass the more difficult testing to earn
higher class federal licenses. There are now more than 682,000 Amateur
Radio operators in the US, and 2.5 million around the world.

In past months, many reports of ham radio operators
providing critical communications in emergencies have been in the news.
From Haiti to California, during floods, fires, earthquakes, tornados
and other crises, Amateur Radio volunteers are providing emergency
communications for many rescue and recovery groups. Amateur Radio
operators are often the first to report critical information to
responders in the first hours of crisis situations. FEMA, DHS, the
National Weather Service, and emergency management offices include
Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES®) operators in their
communications plans. On June 26-27, the public will be able to meet
and talk with the hams and see for themselves what Amateur Radio is all
about. Using everything from Morse code to modern digital and satellite
systems, voice communications and even Web-radio hybrid capabilities,
they prove “It’s not just your Grandfather’s radio anymore.”

Several of the local Shreveport/Bossier amateur radio operators have deployed in the past during times of disaster, when normal communications were disrupted.

The amateur operators will construct temporary, emergency
style radio stations around the country for the weekend and send
messages in many forms -without the use any other infrastructure that
can be compromised in a crisis. Over 35,000 Amateur Radio operators
across the country participated in last year's event. To learn what
modern Amateur Radio systems can do, go to www.ARRL.org/fieldday.
There you can find information about the locations the Amateur Radio
operators will set up in your home area. They can even help you get on
the air!

But more important is to know these terms and how they appy in our craft
so we provide quality products to our customers

A coleague of mine saw the meta tag and exif data for the files that this wedding images were from
The photographer shot the images at High ISO medium jpg file size, under exposed them
then tried to have a working professional recover the mistakes in PhotoShop, of course the damage had be done and they were not fixable !

Remember.......
Small file size compressed files are not suitable for enlargements
High ISO causes Noise (image degradation)
Under exposure increases artifacts in images esp if those files all ready have increased noise in the files
Slow glass, a lens that only allows us to open up to f 5.7 is not the right choice for available or candle lighted weddings where no flash is allowed

Why f/2.8?: "I got asked an interesting question recently. It's a general rule of thumb that most landscape shots are made with the lens stopped way down to maximize depth of field. Given this, why would you need a lens with an f/2.8 aperture?...."

If you have spots on your high key floor or even zits. Use the dust and scraches filter. Set it until the spots disappear even though it will be very blurry. Apply the filter, select the snapshot in the history pallet, then undo the action. Take the history brush and click on the snapshot in the history pallet and select darken or lighten (depending on which you need to do) and brush away those spots very quickly. I use it for some of my retouching too.

When doing kissables or some other template. make a selection hit shift-ctrl-V to paste into your selection. Ctrl-T to transform. and hold the shift key down as you re-size draging the corner in or out to maintain perspective without distorting the image.

I made my own shortcut for packaging wallets 8 to a sheet since that is the way I send them to the lab shift-ctrl-Q
